Benahavis is a beautiful mountain pueblo situated between San Pedro de Alcatara and Estepona. The area of Benahavis is vast and boasts some of the most sought after real estate in Europe including La Zagaleta, Monte Mayor and Marbella Hill Club to name a few. Although you can reach the beaches and coast line within minutes from anywhere in the district Benahavis, it has a real country feel and due to the altitude, in the most part you get amazing views of the coast to the south and the mountains and country side to the east, west and north.
Benahavis is not a “Marbella or Estepona” due to the location. If you are a fan of the outdoors then Benahavis will definitely have something for you. There are challenging walks through the campo and mountains, horse riding, mountain biking, canyoning down the Benahavis river, 4X4 treks and guided tours and of course some of the best golf courses in southern Spain. Following your daily adventures, the restaurants and bars throughout Benahavis offer great variety. From small country ventas to relaxed modern bars and restaurants, Benahavis has a real international feel whilst still offering fantastic local Spanish cuisine and a lively atmosphere.
Finding the right school is a critical part of relocating to the coast and there are several international schools within easy reach of Benahavis. The Bilingual Colegio Atalaya takes children from infant school up to sixth form, and if you are willing to travel 20 minutes or so you have Aloha College in Nueva Andalucia and Swans Internatinal in Nagueles, Marbella.
The security of access to medical care is priority for everyone moving to the coast and whilst the public health system in Spain may differ from what you are used to in your home country, the private healthcare infrastructure along the coast is well developed and most new residents will find that they are well provided for.
Membership of Sanitas for example gives you access to every kind of healthcare from general practitioners and dentists to hospitals and specialist consultants. The Estepona area has the excellent Hospiten on the New Golden Mile and the Clinica del Rio in Estepona town.
The Costa del Sol hospital in Marbella is the nearest public general hospital where you will find translation services are available on request. Access to public healthcare is usually provided at ‘ambulatorios’ and non-Spanish residents can use these for medical emergencies on production of your passport and a European health Insurance card from your country of origin.
Benahavis main attractions
The two biggest attractions of Benahavis are golf and of course, its beauty. If the outdoor activities outlined above are not your cup of tea, the we would highly recommend hiring a car and exploring. As we mentioned, Benahavis is a large area stretching to just short of the famous town of Ronda to the North and with some spectacular roads and continuously changing vistas of countryside and mountains, a road trip is a must. We guarantee that you will find a hidden gem whether it be a restaurant, public park or just a spectacular view, you will not be disappointed.
If you fancy a trip to Ronda, then the main road from Benahavis (The Ronda Road) will have you there in just over an hour. And a must see is the town of Setenil de las Bodegas (the town under the cliff) which is a further 25 minutes from Ronda. With both towns offering a taste of old Spain, you find yourselves with plenty to see and do.
There are no beaches in Benahavis, but there is a fresh water pool and rock area to sunbath and relax at the top of the river and canyon. The main beaches of San Pedro and Guadalmina are a 5-7 minute drive away and Purto Banus is around 12-15 minutes drive.
There are many top restaurants and eateries in Benahavis ranging from traditional Spanish to international and fusion. We have included the trip advisor top restaurants guide to give you a helping hand.
Benahavis has some of the best golf courses and biggest golfing communities on the Costa del Sol. So here are some contact details for our top 3.
Benahavis does not have a main bus station and the only bus leaves twice daily from San Pedro de Alcatara. The main 79 bus takes you on the route along the coast through Marbella to Estepona with both bus stations offering many connections with routes to Málaga. The local L2 route also serves Estepona residents living along the New Golden Mile stretch. The nearest airports are Malaga or Gibraltar, but using the motorway you can reach Málaga airport in just 50 minutes.
